Market President - Farmington, NM and Durango, CO
Meet Adam Kinney. Adam was recently promoted to Farmington, NM and Durango, CO Market President for Vectra Bank. He works out of Vectra’s only branch in New Mexico and oversees the operations for his markets. He ensures that his team is meeting the needs of the community and helping customers succeed financially, all while delivering excellent customer service.
Adam never imaged working in banking. He got his degree in Business Management, and hoped to own his own business one day. Upon graduating, he needed a job, so he took a role in a jewelry store just as his older brother had done. After only six months, the company announced they were closing all of their locations outside of California. Adam decided to stay on and help close the store because he believed in customer service. One day, a customer left the store upset and Adam chased her through mall, brought her back to the store and was able to make her happy. This customer asked what Adam planned to do when the jewelry store closed, and suggested that he come in for an interview at Wells Fargo where she worked.
Adam accepted a position which was brand new at the time, as a Business Specialist. From there, he moved on to being a Business Development Officer and an industry specialist in Government Banking, before coming to Vectra Bank.
When Adam interviewed for the first banking job, the Market President he interviewed with had a sheet of uncut $2 bills framed on his wall. Adam always remembered that, and said he wanted one for himself when he felt like he had “made it” in his career. Just before staring at Vectra, Adam got his own sheet of $2 bills which now hang in his office.
How long have you worked at Vectra and how long in the banking industry?
I have been with Vectra for 8.5 years, and in the banking industry since 2004.
What do you love about working at Vectra?
I truly love our tagline – Big Enough to Count, Small Enough to Care – I live it every day. We can compete with larger banks, but we also know our customers personally and know what’s going on in their lives. I also appreciate the direct access we have to our CEO and senior leadership. They take the time to visit all of the branches and spend time with us. At a larger bank, you’d be lucky to shake the CEO’s hand once at a large gathering.
What would you say sets you apart from others?
I think it’s my drive to raise and support my team. I want to lead by example, and I am huge on supporting my team and giving them opportunities. I want them to be confident that they could do my job one day.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Being a dad to my six kids. “Dad” is a title that’s only used by a few, but it’s the one that means the most. I also enjoy playing golf, coaching soccer, and I serve on several board in the Four Corners region.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
At one point, I would have said something like being able to fly, or having super speed, but I would want those for selfish reasons. Instead, I would want the ability to heal people and take away whatever ails them.
Early last year, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves. It started with numbness in my hands and feet, and eventually I had a hard time walking and completing basic tasks like buttoning my shirt. I’m happy to say that today I’m back to playing golf and coaching soccer, and was even able to go on a run recently! After this experience, I would want to be able to help others in similar situations.
Thank you for all that you do for Vectra Bank, Adam!
