What to Do if You’ve Experienced Account Fraud

Here are steps to take after account fraud, from securing your account to helping prevent further issues.

Seeing a transaction you don’t recognize can throw you off quickly. It’s not always clear what’s happened or what to do first. What matters most is acting early. The sooner you step in, the easier it is to limit the damage and get things back under control.

Start by Contacting Your Bank

If something looks off, don’t wait. Call your bank or card provider and let them know straight away.

They’ll usually walk you through what is happening and take helpful steps, such as:

  • Locking down the account
  • Stopping any pending transactions
  • Starting a dispute over the charge
  • Checking if your details were exposed
  • Issuing a new card or account details
  • Adding alerts or short-term monitoring

The Federal Trade Commission points out that reporting fraud early gives you a better shot at recovering lost money and stopping further activity.

Secure your accounts

Once you’ve flagged it, take a moment to check everything else.

A good place to begin is with your logins. Banking, email, anything tied to payments — update those first. If you’ve reused passwords (most people have at some point), it’s worth changing them elsewhere too.

You might also:

  • Turn on two-factor authentication
  • Scroll through recent transactions across your accounts
  • Check for login alerts or unfamiliar devices

Sometimes these situations don’t stay isolated, so it’s better to be a little thorough here.

Add a Layer of Protection to Your Credit

If there’s a chance your personal details were exposed, you can place a fraud alert on your credit file. It doesn’t stop everything, but it does make lenders pause and verify identity before approving new credit. You only need to contact one of the major credit bureaus — they’ll pass it on.

Some people also choose to freeze their credit. It’s a stronger step, but not always necessary depending on the situation.

Report the Fraud

It helps to have a record of what happened.

IdentityTheft.gov lets you report the issue and gives you a recovery plan based on your situation. It’s fairly straightforward and can save you time figuring things out on your own.

If the situation is more serious, you might also decide to file a police report. While it's not always necessary, it can be beneficial at times.

Keep an Eye on Things

Even after it’s sorted, it’s worth checking in on your accounts more often for a while.

You might notice something small that would’ve otherwise slipped past. A charge, a change, a login — nothing major on its own, but enough to catch early.

Over time, things usually settle back to normal.

Fraud is stressful when it happens. Most people haven’t dealt with it before, so it can feel a bit unclear at first. But once you take the first step, it tends to become more manageable.

If you’re not sure what to do next or just want someone to walk you through it, get in touch with a Vectra banker. We can help you review what’s happened and figure out the next steps.
