What Is Required To Open a Business Checking Account

Learn why business checking accounts are useful and discover what information you need to provide to open one.

A checking account is a useful financial tool for businesses. It allows for flexibility and it can make purchasing and accounting easier. But how do you open a business checking account?

What Is a Business Checking Account?

There may be slightly different fees, rules, and requirements associated with a business checking account, but it serves the same basic functions as a personal checking account, except for a business. It allows for everyday transactions, such as purchasing equipment, paying bills and invoices, accepting credit card payments, and transferring funds into a business savings account.

A business account is suitable for any organization, including small- and medium-sized enterprises. Even if your business doesn’t have any employees, there are benefits to using a business checking account for self-employed individuals. A business checking account allows easy access to funds and can help simplify bookkeeping and tax preparation. With a business checking account, you don’t have to sift through your personal account trying to remember which transactions were business-related.

What Do You Need To Open a Business Checking Account?

There are several documents you need to open a business checking account. These include:

Personal Information

As with any bank account, you need to give the financial institution some personal information, such as:

  • Identification: You’ll need a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license. Some banks may request two types of IDs.
  • Home address: Even if your business has a physical address, you will need to supply your home address. Most banks will not accept a P.O. box.
  • Contact information: Beyond your address, the bank will ask you for contact information, e.g. your phone number and email address.
  • Date of birth and social security number (SSN): The financial institution will request your birth date and  SSN.
Business Details

Here’s the business information the bank might request:

  • Business name: If you don’t have an official business name, you can just use your own name.
  • Business entity type: You’ll have to specify if it’s a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or LLC. Required documentation may include:
    • Sole proprietorship — business name registration certificate and business license.
    • Partnerships — partnership agreement, business name registration certificate, business license, and state certificate of partnership.
    • LLCs — Articles of organization, LLC operating agreement, and business license.
    • Corporations — Articles of incorporation, corporate bylaws, and business license.
  • Employer identification number: Banks may also request corresponding documents from the IRS. Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs may be able to use their SSN instead.
  • Industry and type of business: Some banks don’t allow businesses in all sectors to open accounts with them.
  • Business address and phone number: If your business uses an official location that’s not your home, the bank will want to know this information.
  • Business foundation date: This is when you formed your business. If you registered your business with the state, use that date.
  • Estimated monthly transactions: Sometimes banks will ask for expected monthly transactions.
