How to Navigate Student Loans: From Application to Repayment

Wondering how to handle student loans? Here’s a look at the whole process, from applying for top loans to creating repayment plans.

Navigating student loans can feel like learning a new language: There’s a lot to digest, and the stakes are high. Whether you're just starting your college journey or looking ahead to repayment, understanding the process can save you headaches (and dollars) down the road.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through it all, from application to repayment.

Step 1: Understand Your Loan Options

There are two primary types of student loans: federal and private.

  • Federal loans are funded by the government and typically offer lower interest rates, flexible repayment options and borrower protections like deferment and forbearance.
  • Private loans are offered by banks, credit unions and other financial institutions. They often have higher interest rates and less flexible repayment terms.

You may see two additional terms: subsidized and unsubsidized.

  • Subsidized loans are federal loans where the government pays the interest while you're in school, during the grace period and during any deferment periods.
  • Unsubsidized loans start accruing interest as soon as the loan is disbursed, and you're responsible for all the interest that accumulates.

Step 2: Complete the FAFSA

Once you understand the basics, it’s time to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form determines your eligibility for federal grants, loans and work-study programs. Fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after it opens each year to increase your chances of getting the best financial aid package available.

Step 3: Review and Accept Your Financial Aid Offer

Once your FAFSA is processed, you’ll generally receive a financial aid offer from your school. This offer will outline the types and amounts of aid you qualify for, including grants, scholarships and loans. Grants and scholarships are "free money" that you don’t have to repay, so always accept those first.

When it comes to loans, only borrow what you need. Remember, you’ll have to pay it back — with interest.

Step 4: Manage Your Loans During School

Keep track of how much you’re borrowing each semester. This can help you stay within budget and avoid borrowing more than you can afford to repay. On top of that, consider making interest payments regularly. This can prevent interest from capitalizing (being added to your principal balance), which can significantly reduce the amount you owe after graduation.

Step 5: Understand Repayment Options

After graduation, there’s usually a six-month grace period before you need to start repaying your loans. During this time, you should explore your repayment options. Each plan has different terms, so choose one that fits your financial situation.

Step 6: Keep Up with Payments

Once repayment begins, staying on top of your payments is crucial. Missing payments can hurt your credit score and lead to default, which has serious financial consequences. Set up automatic payments to ensure you never miss a due date.

If you’re struggling to make payments, don’t panic — options like deferment, forbearance and income-driven repayment plans can help. The key is to communicate with your loan servicer and explore all available options before falling behind.

Navigating student loans might seem daunting, but with the right approach, it’s manageable. Contact a Vectra Bank professional today for help making a solid plan.
